Nicklaus Copernicus, a Polish mathematician, physician, economist and astronomer. A renaissance man, he was a mathematician, physician, economist and most famously, an astronomer. He published a work in 1542 stating that the Earth orbited around the Sun. The theory was not accepted at the time, because the Church taught that the Sun orbited the Earth. Over time, and especially with the help of Galileo, some six decades later, his theory became more widely accepted. Many consider Copernicus the father of modern astronomy.
